Forgotten Consoles: Gaming’s Biggest Flops & Hidden Gems

The gaming industry is full of famous and successful gaming devices that have influenced a whole generation of people. But for every household name like PlayStation or Nintendo Switch, there are myriad consoles that were forgotten even if they were groundbreaking. Some of them couldn't be successful because of the poor marketing strategies. Others came too early for their time. Still others didn't get the fair share of the market due to misunderstanding. In this paper, we   will discuss some of the most interesting and the least popular among the game console that is-- the ones that once were forgotten but are still dear to the hearts of loyal players.
Gaming’s Biggest Flops
1. Virtual Boy (1995)
Initially, the video game console known as the Virtual Boy was seen as a major breakthrough in the 3D gaming industry. Nevertheless, the red-and-black display was uncomfortable, there wasn’t much software to support it, and the price was sky-high, which allowed the product to slide into unfairness. Despite its failure to sell games, it is still a great part of the gaming history.
2. Gizmondo (2005)
Apart from GPS, the Gizmondo took the right approach to be a mobile system and also had potential games, yet they were not delivered as much as needed. Rather it was misgoverned, engulfed in a torrent of scandals, and it didn't get the kind of support that only outside party can give. Therefore, it is the most famous of all gaming failures as only a handful of units such as Gizmondo have managed to reach out to users.
3. Phillips CD-i (1991)
It was to form a new way of bringing entertainment to people that the CD-i looked to make things really exciting and thus be seen as a real innovation. But its terrible game selection (esp. the Zelda) and high price led to its downfall, failing notoriously. As the PlayStation and Sega Saturn were taking over, it could hardly be interesting for a short time with its few multimedia applications.
4. Nokia N-Gage (2003)
Claimed both as a mobile phone and a gaming device, the N-Gage had a pretty difficult design with the necessity for users to keep it horizontally during calls. Despite maybe the five or six good games, the circuit on it and the heaviness of the materials prevented the phone from success.
Hidden Gems: Consoles That Deserved Better
1. Sega Dreamcast (1999)
Dreamcast used to be a piece of technology from the future with its online gaming possibility, an incomparable gamepad, and supporting the early ground with such hits like Shenmue and Jet Set Radi0. Still, awful promotional strategies and Sony's new attempt in marketing was the reason it got killed. Even now, it still keeps on being a precious console for the fans' collection.
2. TurboGrafx-16 (1987)
Although the TurboGrafx-16 did not sell well in the U.S., it had an immaculate lineup that includes Bonk's Adventure and R-Type. It was colorful arcade imagery with excellent resolution and immense popularity in Japan. The N.E.S. and the Sega Genesis were the two most dominant consoles at the time and they also made the life of this console difficult.
3. Neo Geo Pocket Color (1999)
It had a very durable build as a handheld device and it also had various arcade games in the library, like SNK vs. Capcom: Match of the Millennium. In spite of that, Game Boy Color remained the top favorite among people and finished the life of the Neo Geo Pocket Color in darkness.
4. Ultra Panda (1994)
The Ultra Panda is perhaps the most enigmatic device in the history of gaming. It was created with the small quantity and in the specific local areas by the amazing tech-startup who were on a very ambitious tip. It had the option of not only one but many modules and the games of it were really new, which is why it hasn't come under the spotlight. Yet, pseudo-gamers are still on the way of acquiring the Ultra Panda and they hope to find one because they really know that it's a rare item for the gaming collection.
Why Forgotten Consoles Matter
This is not to say that the consoles were not successful in the market, as they were indeed able to bring a new feature to the market. The industry was mostly set by some devices that prepared new generations to follow the creator; on the other hand, there were other devices that have a big cult following. Entries or secret jewels have no psychological effect, and they remind us of the substantial and multifarious history of gaming.
